  • Terrell Elementary offers several programs for Special Education:

    Dyslexia Services

The Lamar CISD dyslexia program is offered to students in grades K-12 who are identified as having dyslexia through IDEA. The program is offered as a pull-out intervention, meaning students are pulled out of the general education classroom to receive the intervention in a small
group setting. Evidence-based dyslexia programs and instruction are considered specially designed instruction (SDI) and, therefore, constitute special education services; therefore, the provision of these services must follow the IDEA requirements. This means that evidence-based dyslexia instruction is only available to students who are served under IDEA, which prescribes the legal requirements for special education and related services. Additionally, students who have exited the program remain on a monitoring status after completing the program.

    Resource and Inclusion

The Resource Program enables students (K-12) with disabilities to receive individualized instruction at their current academic level in either a one-on-one or small group setting, outside of the General Education classroom, on their home campus. Resource support is part of the Special Education continuum of placement settings and is provided in designated academic areas, as decided by the ARD Committee, which consists of a Special Education teacher working in conjunction with General Education to implement students’ Individual Educational Plans (IEPs).  Based on the student's needs, this program involves a combination of indirect support (accommodations/modifications) and direct support from the Special Education teacher working with the student. Students are removed from the General Education setting for a portion of the instructional day, as determined by the ARD Committee, and provided with intensive instructional interventions to close academic gaps and facilitate access to the General Education curriculum. The goal of the Resource program is to be a temporary placement that leads to full reintegration into the General Education classroom.

The Inclusion Program enables students (K-12) with disabilities to receive instruction in the general education setting alongside their typical or non-disabled peers on their home campus. Inclusion support is provided in designated academic areas, as decided by the ARD Committee, and consists of a special education teacher and/or a paraprofessional collaborating with the general education teacher to assist in the implementation of students’ Individual Educational Plans (IEPs). Specially designed instruction can consist of accommodations, modifications, and targeted interventions in a small-group setting within the General Education classroom.

    Early Childhood Special Education

The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) program is for students ages 3-5 who require specialized teaching strategies and the ongoing development of communication, cognitive, social, and behavioral skills. The purpose is to provide early intervention with an emphasis on acquiring behaviors and skills considered most important for future learning (i.e., imitation, attending, compliance); developing oral language; establishing age-appropriate self-care skills (i.e., toilet training); and reducing interfering behaviors.

The program follows a district-adopted research-based curriculum for Pre-K. In the ECSE classroom, teachers strive to differentiate the instruction so that all children achieve at their individual levels. The classroom schedule incorporates whole-group, small-group, and individualized instruction throughout the class day. Children may also receive related services (i.e., Speech, Occupational, or Physical Therapy), as deemed required by the Admission, Review, Dismissal Committee. The ARD committee will routinely assess a student’s Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and consider a continuum of services with opportunities for the student to participate in an inclusive setting as deemed appropriate.

    Inclusion opportunities may consist of:

    • Pegasus
    • General Education Pre-K
    • General Education Kindergarten

    Social Emotional Support Classroom (SESC)

The SESC provides structured support for social and emotional learning in conjunction with academics. Students progress through levels by showing appropriate behavior, with trained staff using individualized strategies to maximize learning time.
